WSSB Tandems - Riding Again FINALLY! Can you help...
Author Last Post

Hello, VBCers,

The VBC has been so supportive of the tandem rides at the Washington State School of Blind over the years I thought I’d go to the well one more time.  😊

The WSSB administration has decided to allow tandem riding at the school in early June and for some summer school sessions. As you might imagine they are adding a number of protocols to make sure the studenta stay as safe as possible.

In addition to the normal volunteer application/background check that has always been required, three new non-ride safety precautions have been added –

1) mandatory online check-in with Covid protocols the day of each ride

2) a 60-minute, attendance-mandatory, online volunteer training that highlights new volunteer requirements and

3) all volunteers must have had their final Covid vaccination shot 2 weeks prior to volunteering at the WSSB.

I highlighted the information above for 3 reasons:

  1. To show how serious the school is about protecting the students (and by default our captains)
  2. Help you understand the requirements to volunteer so you aren’t surprised by the new requirements
  3. To note that these requirements have severely limited the number of captains we have to ride with the students (whence, this SOS note)

We have scheduled rides on June 3rd, 7th and 8th and a couple for summer school in later June that are as of yet unscheduled.

Captains don’t need prior experience but they should be strong cyclists.

Please forward to any potential captains; your help would be deeply appreciated and would make our kids happy!  Contact me or Adrienne Fernandez, the Recreation and Volunteer Coordinator at the WSSB. Ms Adrienne.fernandez@wssb.wa.gov

Ride Safe, Have Fun
