This is the first:

This is called the"Washougal Cornucopia"as it heads east to Washougal and has a little bit of everything from start to finish, including:
  • Visit the ponds at the Vancouver Trout Hatchery
  • Spectacular residential properties along River Drive and Evergreen and in the low traffic River Shore Landing and Lacamas Shores communities
  • Smooth (save a short section of Evergreen- see below), low traffic roads heading east
  • Urban riding in Camas and Washougal
  • Optionalopportunity to walk your bike out onto the Columbia River via the Steamboat Landing floating boardwalk
  • Paved bike trails in the Washougal Waterfront Park, Steamboat Landing Park and Columbia Waterfront Renaissance Park
  • Optionalstop for ice cream (DQ) or coffee (Caffe Piccolo) in charming downtown Camas (group will decide in advance)
  • Substantial hills coming out of Camas and along Lacamas Lake
  • Rivers and lakes
  • Smooth roads with good shoulders from top of Lake Street hill to end of route
  • Numerous opportunities for restroom stops

DANGER/UNPAVED AREAS ALONG THE ROUTE

99+% of the ride is on paved streets/paths. There is a short (100' - 200') section of gravel when leaving Steamboat Landing Park in Washougal. There is fine crushed limestone (that will not despoil your newly cleaned chain) for a short section of the Discovery Loop in Ft. Vancouver.

Some potentially dangerous areas include:
  • About 1.1 miles of very rough road along Evergreen (just east of 164th); can easily pick your way through at about 12 mph max.
  • Avoiding high traffic on 6th in Camas by taking to the hills north of the lumber mill, leaving us with a safer left turn and short, 400' ride around the mill
  • No shoulder on short (~500') bridge over Washougal River
  • Busy roundabouts in Washougal
  • No guardrails on floating boardwalk in Steamboat Landing Park
  • Left turn off of SE McGilvray/SE 10th and Nancy

GROUP RIDE... NOT A RACE

At the carpark the ride leader will ask for avolunteer to act as sweep. We may change out sweeps at the rest stop in Camas for the return leg. Everyone will get a good workout all along the route, but we do want to stop from time to time and take in the scenery as noted above. This will be a group ride, where the leader will maintain line-of-sight with the back of the group. We will wait at traffic lights and at the tops of hills. Since the route home is relatively straight-forward from the top of the Lake Street hill, the leader will consider releasing (so he and the sweep know how many will remain in the group) those who wish to hammer down on the return to the carpark.
