Hello VBC Members,

Clark County's full closure of NE 50th Ave between NE 159th and NE 179th to bicycle traffic has eliminated one of our primary safe corridors. VBC has identified safer detour routes (see here and here), but the only publicly available alternative corridor, NE 10th Ave, is dangerous due to high-speed traffic and a lack of safe shoulders.

We need your help immediately.

Please take a few minutes to copy and paste the email below and send it to the Clark County Councilors today. Your personalized email is critical to show the depth of concern from the cycling community.

Subject: Urgent: Request for Safe Bicycle Access or Detour on NE 50th Ave

Dear Councilors,

As a resident of Clark County and an active cyclist, I am writing to express my concern regarding the full closure of NE 50th Ave between NE 159th and NE 179th to bicycle traffic.

The current closure of NE 50th and NE 29th Ave has removed the primary corridors used by hundreds of residents for multimodal transportation, recreation, and exercise. The only publicly available alternative corridor, NE 10th Ave, is dangerous for non-car transportation due to high-speed traffic and a lack of shoulders in some areas.

I urge you to work with Clark County Public Works to prioritize cyclist safety by:
  • Allowing managed bicycle access through the construction zone;
  • Establishing a well-signed, safe, and appropriate cycle detour that avoids dangerous corridors like NE 10th Ave.
Safely maintaining non-motorized access or providing a dedicated detour during major road projects is a best practice for public health and safety. I hope Clark County will take these steps to keep our roads safe for all users.

Thank you for your time and leadership.

Sincerely,
