Good morning, everyone.
Just as we check the forecast for rain and temperature, tracking area air quality has become part of our ride leaders' routine when planning cycling days. We are now in the process of rolling out an air quality enhancement to the ride cancellation advisory language that is embedded in posted rides.
We are not defining medical safety thresholds. We are providing a baseline to help leaders and you make informed, personal decisions about when to ride. At an Air Quality Index (AQI) of:
- 101–150: Leaders and riders may choose to cancel or drop out at their discretion.
- 151–200: Leaders should consider canceling, though it remains at their discretion—just like rain or cold.
- Above 200: The Club recommends canceling, but the final call remains yours.
Going forward, ride postings will be updated to read: Cancellation Considerations: Rain / Temps < 40°F / Lightning / Wind > 25 mph / Air Quality AQI > 100
The "Air Quality AQI > 100" text will link to a single Club page with the tiers and data sources, keeping our ride listings concise and uncluttered. Please note that AQI readings are averages and can lag; if you see or smell smoke, assume conditions are worse than the posted number.
While ride leaders retain the authority to proceed with or cancel an event, you need to take your own health situation into consideration in deciding whether to register/participate/cancel. If desired, you can use IQAir's Vancouver, WA page for current readings and forecasts to help inform your decision-making.
